Who Should Buy a Slackline

Slacklining is one of those activities that pretty much anyone can try. If you have an interest in fitness, being outside, and not taking yourself too seriously, you will enjoy slacklining.

As the sport becomes more popular, fitness experts are realizing the many health benefits of slacklining. It’s no surprise that slacklining does wonders for balance, but it also works your quadriceps, improves strength, and helps with coordination. But let’s go back to balance. As more health experts are coming to realize, balance is one of the most important components of fitness and is especially important when it comes to aging. The ability to stay on your feet or correct yourself after a fall can greatly reduce the risk of serious injuries.

Fitness aside, slacklining is just a fun way to pass the time (you may not even realize how hard you’re working!). If you are looking for a fun outdoor activity that you can do with friends just about anywhere, you won’t regret purchasing a slackline. This activity is great for the whole family but it also can get as advanced as you want it to!

Trailblaze Complete Slackline Kit

The Trailblaze Complete Slackline Kit has everything you need to learn and master slacklining.

Important Features to Consider

A slackline should have a few important features. Here’s what to consider when selecting a slackline:

  • Length. When choosing a line slackline, you want to be sure you have the right length. Typically around 40-50 ft long is perfect. If you are more advanced and looking for one to set up higher and at longer lengths, you might want to explore lines with more webbing.
  • Width. When it comes to width, there are typically two choices: 1″ and 2″. 1″ is usually more advanced as there is less surface area where 2″ is better for beginners who are looking for a wider balance platform, and these typically feature a ratchet system.
  • Materials. When looking for a slackline, the webbing is the most important part. You want it to bounce but also with a rigid “low stretch”. The more rigid your line is, the lower you can set it up (and this is important if you are first learning!).
  • Ratchet system. A good ratchet system makes tightening your slackline much easier. A line that features a single lever-and-lock ratchet is typically a good choice.
  • Accessories. When first learning to slackline, it’s important that you have a training line or “helpline”. This will give you something to hold onto when you lose balance. Another key accessory are tree guards. These ensure that the trees you use to set up your line are safe while also protecting your line from wear and tear.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the point of slacklining?

The point of slacklining differs from person to person but it is generally to improve balance and enjoy being outside. When learning, the point is often to walk the line from end to end. More advanced moves include doing tricks such as bouncing up and down or sit starting.

Is slacklining dangerous?

Like any sport, slacklining can be dangerous and it is important to practice relevant safety measures.  This includes understanding how to properly set up and take down the line, setting the line up at an appropriate height, and making sure you have the best accessories for your skill level. If you are first learning, a training line can be especially beneficial as it will give you something to hold on to when you lose balance.

How tight should a slackline be?

If you’re just learning to slackline, it’s generally good to set up a line that is not too long and not too tight. You want your line to be tight enough where it doesn’t touch the ground but loose enough where there is some bounce. As you slackline, you will probably notice your line getting a bit looser after a while so be sure to tighten it throughout your session as needed.

Is it better to slackline with shoes or barefoot?

Whether you slackline barefoot or with shoes is based on preference. Some people believe that being barefoot helps their balance as they can slightly adjust their foot for ultimate balance. Others believe that having the flat surface area of a shoe helps their balance. If you do go barefoot, make sure you are landing on a soft surface!
